DuBois Quenching and Tempering Salts are composed of nitrite &/or nitrate-based chemistries. They are completely water-soluble, easy to wash off parts, and have high heat transfer rates and heat capacity.
Nitrite/Nitrate Based Salt
Thermo-Quench is a eutectic nitrate/nitrite granular salt mixture that can be used for interrupted or isothermal quenching of austenitized steels. These processes include such heat-treating applications as Austempering, Martempering, or Marquenching. Also, Thermo-Quench is suitable for tempering or “drawing” hardened steels.
Thermo-Quench is chemically and thermally stable when used within its working range, exceptionally fluid, completely water soluble and has high thermal conductivity. Liquidity (drag-out) at 400°F is approximately 0.065 grams per square inch. The organic anti-caking agent incorporated into Thermo-Quench can interfere with the ability of water additions to increase the molten salt’s quench severity. To prevent this possibility, it is recommended to use Thermo-Quench W/O.
Thermo-Quench can be used as a quench from any austenitizing medium, except cyanide-base salts. It is not advisable to quench steel parts from temperatures above 1650°F into Thermo-Quench unless the parts are small and separated. For parts austenitized at temperatures > 1650°F, a neutral bath at an intermediate temperature may be employed as a stabilizing medium before the isothermal quench in salt.
Nitrate Based Salt
Tempering C-ALHT is a eutectic potassium/sodium nitrate mixture formulated to meet AMS 2821 Class 2. It can be used for the annealing and solution heat treatment of aluminum alloys and other non-ferrous alloys such as Nitinol. Tempering C-ALHT is also suitable for tempering or “drawing” hardened steels.
Tempering C-ALHT is exceptionally fluid in the molten state, completely water-soluble only requiring tap water to wash off parts and has excellent chemical & thermal stability when used within its working range. It can be used as a quench from any austenitizing media, except cyanide-base salts. It is not advisable to quench steel parts from temperatures > 1650°F into Tempering C-ALHT unless the parts are small and separated. For parts austenitized at temperatures > 1650ºF, a neutral bath at an intermediate temperature should be employed as a stabilizing medium before the isothermal quench in Tempering C-ALHT.
Large numbers of tools can be safely hardened in a short time frame using a high-speed steel (HSS) salt bath setup. These salts are formulated for proper heat treatment of HSS by balancing the salt’s composition to ensure a neutral bath, reduce drag-out or carryover, and to promote easy cleaning. Tool steels can be heat-treated rapidly and uniformly to eliminate distortion without oxidation or decarburization (pitting) on the surface of parts.
Barium Chloride Based Salt
Sta-Hard 17 is a salt mixture containing barium chloride. It is generally used for preheating high speed steel tools or for hardening, annealing and normalizing carbon and alloy steels. Its stability makes it especially suitable for heating alloy tool steels which require high hardening temperatures.
High-speed steel (HSS or HS) is a subset of tool steels, commonly used as cutting tool material. It is often used in power-saw blades and drill bits. High Speed 75 is a barium-based salt used for hardening high speed tool steels at temperatures greater than 1900°F. The liquidity (drag-out) of High Speed 75 at 2200°F is estimated at 0.065 grams per square inch.
800 Neutral Salt is a granular mixture containing barium chloride. Its low melting point and working range make it suitable for ferrous heat-treating operations. These include heating for hardening, cycle and sub-critical annealing, high temperature drawing, and hot quenching of high alloy tool steels within its working range. 800 Neutral Salt is especially suitable as a quenching and tempering medium for high-speed steels.
DuBois Neutral Salts are balanced mixtures of chlorides designed to provide a pH-neutral salt bath. They provide excellent fluidity, low drag-out rates, highly stable with routine replenishing, and are not hygroscopic. Nu-Sal can be used for pretreating and hardening a variety of steels.
Chloride Based Salt
Nu-Sal is a barium free chloride mixture with low weight per cubic foot properties and has excellent fluidity within its working temperature range. It is easily washed from oil-quenched work because it is completely water soluble. Also, Nu-Sal is not hygroscopic, so it is less corrosive than other salts to the metal fixtures, electrodes, etc.
Nu-Sal can be used for all neutral salt bath heating operations. These include austenitizing of carbon and low alloy steels for hardening, reheating carburized steels, annealing and spheroidizing. Nu-Sal is the ideal austenitizing medium for steels to be austempered, martempered, or otherwise isothermally quenched, because its fluidity minimizes drag-out and it dissolves readily in the salt bath quench. It can be used as a pre-heat for high-speed steel tools, replacing barium containing salts if it is desirable to use the preheat bath for austenitizing other types of steel.
DuBois Rectifier Pellets help maintain optimum hardening neutral salt bath conditions by removing harmful oxides, which develop in the working salt at temperatures above 1400°F. These products are designed for the accurate control of the rectification process and do not produce sludge.
Salt Bath Additive
15 Rectifier Pellets are used to remove harmful oxide contamination in Nu-Sal baths. Oxides in the bath are created at the air/molten salt interface, where oxygen is absorbed by the salt. Soils on the surface of parts immersed in Nu-Sal can also contribute to oxide contamination. The oxides bond with carbon atoms on the surface of immersed parts; thus, stripping the surface of carbon content, resulting in parts not reaching targeted hardness levels. The pellets eliminate the oxides while adding no sludge, as with first generation rectifiers. 15 Rectifier Pellets will provide rapid and efficient rectification, even in deep baths. Pellets are safe to store, handle, and utilize inexpensive handling equipment.
20 Rectifier Pellets are used to remove harmful oxide contamination found in Sta-Hard 45, High Speed 60, 175-S Starting Salt & High Speed 75 salt baths. Oxides in the bath are created at the air/molten salt interface where oxygen is absorbed by the salt. Soils on the surface of parts immersed in these salts can also contribute to oxide contamination. The oxides bond with carbon atoms on the surface of immersed parts; thus, stripping the surface of carbon content resulting in parts not reaching targeted hardness levels. 20 Rectifier Pellets are offered as an effective alternative to existing solid and gaseous processes for maintaining oxide free neutral salt baths used at temperatures between 1900 – 2400°F.
Molten salt baths are recognized as the ideal media for brazing aluminum assemblies. DuBois dip brazing salts are lithium chloride-based and offer continuous temperature control, rapid and uniform heating rates, and natural buoyancy that minimizes distortion. Alu-Braze 860 meets the latest revisions of AMS 3415 and AWS A5.31M/A5.31.
Lithium Chloride Based Salt
Molten salt baths are generally recognized as the ideal media for brazing many aluminum assemblies. Dip brazing is widely used in the fabrication of such items as heat exchangers, antennas fixed on satellites, wave guides and aircraft parts. Aluminum dip brazing salt operations offer many advantages over other methods.
These include:
Molten salt baths offer several key advantages over oil, hot air, and steam methods to cure rubber extrusions. These advantages include higher heat capacity, greater rate of heat exchange, shorter curing times, and lower levels of heat loss. Parcure 275 is a eutectic nitrate/nitrate inorganic salt mixture that is exceptionally chemically and thermally stable when used within its working range to give repeatable results.
Molten salt baths are in widespread use for continuous curing (vulcanization) of rubber extrusions. Salt baths have advantages over alternate curing methods such as oils, hot air, & steam for several reasons:
Parcure 275 is an eutectic mixture of nitrate/nitrite based inorganic salts used for this application. It is exceptionally fluid and chemically & thermal stable in the molten state when used within its working range.
